champions earn July honor

The Southside boys 14’s volleyball team has been named the Big Island Athletes of the Month for July.

The Southside squad from the Big Island captured the boys 14 club division title in July in the United States Association of Volleyball national championships.

The week-long junior nationals, with various age groups ranging up to 18 and under, was played in Reno, Nev..

The Southside 14 boys, under coaches Guy Enriques and Sam Thomas, were seeded 20th in the 68-team field and finished a perfect 12-0. The undersized Big Island squad beat a team from Pittsburgh, Pa., in the finals, 25-17, 25-18.

Members of the champion Southside 14’s squad were Addison Enriques, Avery Enriques, Na’ia Makuakane, Tristen Cross, Abishai Campbell, Christopher Correa, Kameron Moses, Logan Thomas, Cole “Nakana” Labrie, Daylan-Blake Kalai and Chase Carter.

The Big Island athlete of the month program is sponsored by Don’s Grill, under owner Don Hoota. The athlete of the month as well as athlete and sportsperson of the year programs were founded by the late Jack Matsui.

Members of the selection committee are Hugh Clark, Ramon Goya, Stan Costales and chairman Bill O’Rear.

Waiakea’s Medeiros

to pitch at Classic

Waiakea High School senior Kodi Medeiros will pitch in the Perfect Game All-American Classic on Sunday at Petco Park in San Diego.

Medeiros, a southpaw pitcher for Waiakea, earned a spot in the All-American Classic after an impressive performance in an earlier showcase this summer on the mainland. He is being projected as a second- through fourth-round pick in the 2014 Major League Baseball draft.

The high school all-star game features many of the top prep players in the country, and this is the sixth time in the past seven years that it will be played at the home of the San Diego Padres.

It will be televised on the MLB Network, starting at 2 p.m. Hawaii Standard Time.
